Women’s Traditional is one of the longstanding women’s powwow dance categories. Powwow Times’ existing teachings connect the style with women as mothers, protectors and providers, while specific meanings and protocols vary by family, Nation, region and event.

What is Women’s Traditional Dance?
In Powwow Times’ existing dance-style guide, Women’s Traditional is described as one of the older powwow categories and as a dance carrying stories of resilience, motherhood and women waiting for warriors to return home.
These teachings should not be treated as the only explanation for every Women’s Traditional dancer. Dancers and communities may carry their own stories and responsibilities.
Women’s Traditional styles
Our existing guide notes variations including women’s cloth and buckskin. Category names, judging and regional styles can differ between powwows, so the event’s own program and MC are the best guides at a particular gathering.
Regalia and personal meaning
Regalia can reflect the dancer, family, community and particular style. Powwow Times’ existing teaching also notes that some Women’s Traditional dancers carry cradleboards. Do not assume that every dancer or piece carries the same meaning, and never touch someone’s regalia without permission.
How to recognize Women’s Traditional at a powwow
Women’s Traditional is distinct from women’s Jingle Dress and Fancy Shawl categories. Powwow Times’ existing teaching emphasizes dignity, resilience, motherhood and longstanding roles carried by women. The way those teachings are expressed can vary significantly among dancers and regions.
Women’s Cloth and Buckskin
Powwow Times’ dance-style guide identifies cloth and buckskin as variations found within Women’s Traditional. Some events separate categories while others organize them differently. The host powwow’s program, MC and contest rules determine how the categories are presented at that gathering.
Women’s Traditional compared with other women’s categories
A powwow may feature Women’s Traditional alongside Jingle Dress and Women’s Fancy or Fancy Shawl. Each has its own movement, regalia and histories. A useful way for a new spectator to learn is to watch several rounds and listen to the MC explain which category is entering the arena.
Women’s Traditional FAQ
Is Women’s Traditional one single style?
No. Powwow Times’ existing material specifically recognizes variations such as cloth and buckskin, and styles can differ by region and community.
Why do some dancers carry cradleboards?
Our existing Powwow Times teaching connects this with motherhood, giving life and protection. That should not be assumed to be the meaning for every individual dancer; ask respectfully when a dancer chooses to share the meaning of her own regalia.
