Quick answer: If you are attending a powwow as a visitor, wear comfortable everyday clothing that suits the weather and venue. You do not need to dress Indigenous to attend. Listen to the host and MC for event-specific guidance.

This guide is for first-time visitors. Powwows vary by Nation, community, region and event, so the host’s directions always take priority over general advice.

What should a visitor wear to a powwow?

Wear what you would normally choose for a long community event: comfortable clothes, good footwear and layers appropriate for the weather. Outdoor powwows can mean sun, wind, rain, cool evenings and long periods of walking or sitting.

Do I need to wear Indigenous clothing?

No. A visitor can attend in ordinary street clothes. Do not feel that you need to imitate a dancer’s clothing or wear cultural items you do not understand in order to participate.

Regalia is not a costume

The clothing worn by powwow dancers is commonly called regalia, not a costume. Regalia can include beadwork, feathers, bustles, moccasins and other pieces that may carry personal, family or cultural meaning. Do not touch a dancer’s regalia without permission. Read our Regalia vs. Costume guide for more context.

Can I dance at the powwow in regular clothes?

When the MC invites visitors into an open Intertribal, you can participate in your everyday clothing. You do not need regalia. Learn more in our Intertribal dance guide.

What else should I prepare for?

Check whether the event is indoors or outdoors, look at the weather, and read the organizer’s current information. For the full visitor checklist, see our First Powwow Guide and Powwow Etiquette Guide.
