Secretly you want to do your skill full-time and free up a lot of your time to do what you love.

Now it’s not going to be easy, it’s going to take some determination and work. If you do this work, you will get rewarded with outcomes you always dreamed about.

It’s important that you read this post all the way to the end and I will teach you all the lessons I’ve learned to earn more than $400k a year as an artist, just using my home as my main office.

The Breakthrough for Your Artistry

At the time I wanted to be a full time artist, I was living in a 4-plex unit that cost me $825 a month. I was working a sales job selling electronics for $8/hr. I was barely getting by to cover this cost with the bills and food costs for my growing family.

I had a couple skills as an artist.

  • I knew how to make bustles but not the greatest
  • I knew how to dance powwow but I wasn’t great

I thought, if I could only make $900 a month as an artist, I would be able to maybe go full-time as an artist but people don’t know I have these skills and I don’t know if I can start getting enough work to make it happen.

I went to the bookstore to try figure out if there was anything that could help me out. I ended up finding this awesome book called, “Influence, the Psychology of Persuasion” by Robert Cialdini”.

I learned so much from this book, it would later become the reason why me and my fellow students can make over 100k+ per year as an full-time artist.

First thing is you have to make your goal. Mine was $900 a month as an artist and using the strategies in the book I just bought was my way to make it.

Getting Yourself Known as an Artist

If you want to get hired as an artist, people got to know your skills.

The people who hire you need to know that they want to hire you because of what you can bring to the table.

To this, you need to start sharing your talents with the world. Nowadays it’s a lot easier then when I got started. You got all these platforms like Tiktok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. These programs can help you share your talents with the world and you will find out how good you are to the people.

Keep in mind though, that at first the people who are watching your stuff may just be friends and family and may not be your intended target audience.

You have to find a way to get your talents out there and start to build relationships.

Here are a few things I did immediately to help get my career as an artist started.

  • I reached out to local schools and started to offer FREE performances and workshops for my powwow dancing.
  • I posted my work on Facebook whenever I made bustles
  • I shared my gratitude whenever I was shipping out another order to another satisfied customer to show social proof that people were ordering my stuff.
  • I created a pamphlet that had my services and handed it out all over my city to my intended audience where I would like to work and get hired.

I kept it really simple with my marketing plan. Just these things listed above was enough to start getting me more work than I can handle.

The most powerful one of them all was to offer my services for FREE. In the book there is a persuasion law called the law of Reciprocity.

The Power of The Law of Reciprocity

This needs it’s very own section.

The law of reciprocity is all about giving. Give all you got. Give your talents. Give your skills. When you do this, the people getting all the value from you feel as if they need to give back to you in some way or fashion.

They literally feel like they owe you.

But you are not operating on that, you just understand that is what is happening. You are giving because you love what you do.

Then what happens is this:

  • They recommend you to other organizations
  • They call you back to hire you for another thing
  • They praise you in public and promote your work for you

This is how I started getting a lot of people inquiring about my skills and hiring me as an artist.
