Updated October 1, 2026: Two Tsawwassen First Nation Elders were killed and two other people remain in critical condition after a vehicle struck four pedestrians in the parking lot at Tsawwassen Mills in Delta, British Columbia.

The collision happened shortly after 10:25 a.m. on September 30, while Tsawwassen First Nation was holding a Truth and Reconciliation Walk nearby. The event ended early after the incident.

In an October 1 update, the Delta Police Department said both Elders were pronounced dead at the scene. The two other people who were struck were airlifted to hospital and remain in critical condition.

The names of the Elders have not been released. Police said investigators are working with the BC Coroners Service and supporting the affected families.

What police have confirmed

No indication the collision was intentional

Delta Police said there is currently no information suggesting the collision was intentional. Investigators are examining whether a medical emergency experienced by the driver before the collision may have been a contributing factor.

The department also said the collision was not related to the Truth and Reconciliation Walk taking place on Tsawwassen First Nation lands at the time. Police reported no ongoing risk to public safety.

The investigation remains active, and police have not yet reached a final conclusion about the cause.

Tsawwassen First Nation responds

In a statement issued September 30, Tsawwassen First Nation said it was deeply saddened and asked the public to respect the families and the continuing response. The Nation also thanked Delta Police, emergency responders and community members who provided assistance.

The deaths came on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, a day that honours residential school Survivors, the children who never returned home, and their families and communities.
