In 1927 the New York Giants won the National Football League. They were a top tier team that would destroy all their competition. The standings for the league that year were:
After winning the championship, the NY Giants faced off with the Hominy Indians at a high school field. It was a tough fought battle but the Indians ended up beating the World Champions 13-6.
Years later, a documentary called – “Playground of the Native Son” came out to tell the story of the football game. The documentary featured Adam Beach who narrated the story for all to watch.
There was a lot of top tier high level Indigenous athletes. Part of the reason why you don’t see much representation in Sports now a days is because of all the oppression that was forced on to Indigenous peoples.
They tried to take our spirits away in boarding schools and residential schools. Many weren’t allowed to leave the reservation and weapons to hunt were taking away. There was a pass system in place where you couldn’t leave the reservation and you would be taken to jail if you practiced your culture and heritage.
It was our culture and heritage that made us great athletes and it took a big hit on Indigenous peoples becoming and maintaining our athleticism.
Now as we begin our healing journeys, you can now see many more Indigenous athletes being represented at the highest levels of sports.
