The blog we have went through before explain one of the most highly rated HBO shows that was filmed about modern indigenous culture called Reservation Dogs. It is a very great show and if you want to watch and enjoy this show it is also available on prime. However, we are going to dive into another great film which been part of a very awesome franchise and now is indigenous cooperated.

The movie that we will be discussing is a film that is called Prey which is a newer movie that came out in 2022 and is part of a legendary franchise. Prey is incorporated with the predator series which is one of the most well known movie trilogies in the world, and is a big step for indigenous culture to be widely recognized by everyone.

This movie was amazing and very entertaining to watch. It kept in suspense while the whole film gave that nostalgic feeling we all know and love if you happen to watch the rest of predator films before this one. In this vlog, we’ll be going deep down in the movie and explain why this film is an important aspect to indigenous culture and why this film is a good movie to watch.

PREY: 2022

Prey came out in the year of 2022 as a science fiction film that is a part of the legendary franchise called the predator series. But what made this movie unique to its original science fiction movies is the time it took place and the who it was affecting. Prey dove deep into the universe where it affected the Comanche tribes in the great northern plains settled in North America.

This added a great deal with involving indigenous identity to movie series and something new and different into there franchise. It became a very popular and great film and the best thing about it, was the constant focus on the main character Naru (Amber Midthunder) and the suspense of being in her point of view throughout the entire movie.

And obviously we realize that the predator movies have always been great movies to watch, and will always be a fan favourite for all the sci-fi lovers. Prey wasn’t any different, It still gave a very good feel for classic predator films but the show was still entirely different from the rest of the franchise. The alien was different and also the main protagonist as well.

Development of the film began during the production of The Predator film back in 2018, when producer John Davis was approached by Trachtenberg and Aison, with a concept that they had been developing since 2016. In late 2020, the film’s title was revealed to be the codename for the fifth installment in the franchise.

Filming took place around Calgary Alberta during the summer of 2021, with the entire film shot in English and some sequences shot in the Comanche language as well. The remaining sequences were dubbed into Comanche by the cast, reprising their roles. The film is the only feature film to have a full Comanche language dub.

What made this Film a great movie?

7/10 was the rating for this movie which makes this movie a pretty solid film. But what made this movie so great is the classic suspense build up that most of these movies had. The monster, sci-fi action gave it a wonderful movie for people to enjoy and a major win on its Native American portrayals.

Which is an important aspect to think about because there is not many movies out there that influence that. The reasoning that made this a good film was the mostly the unique curve that the predator series didn’t have in the last four movies. They took a really nice turn and added indigenous culture to the mix as it was new to most predator fans and gave them a new alternate feel for the movie.

Aside from that aspect, the movie was enjoyable and the story and character development kept a good flow as well as the story telling throughout the film. It wasn’t too ballistically complicated and overdoing but it was just a good film to enjoy as a sci-fi movie.

Indigenous Involvement

the main focus in this movie was the indigenous involvement in this film, and the Comanche tribe was an incredible mix to it. We don’t often get deep involving in indigenous culture in movies and it was really nice to see that in one of the most popular and well known movie franchises in the history of movies.

This is important because us and indigenous culture really needs to be recognize more often and for some movie producers and directors may think it isn’t all that big of a deal but to us, it is really important feature every time we see it. It also brings indigenous communities some sort of pride to see indigenous individuals to become widely known and recognize in an industry that is so full of diverse actors.

This is what made Prey a really cool movie because of how much it focused on Indigenous culture and it is well liked by indigenous audiences. It was very neat to watch and I hope the movie industries can continue to add not just Native American culture but other new and interesting culture that is scattered across the globe.

Cinematography/Historical Development

The viewing of this show was amazing, the primal starting of time feel gave it something that was awfully entertaining to watch. Everything was designed to make the environment feel real, and that is something to appreciate when the whole film was done with very good quality.

The development of the atmosphere is amazing as well, a lot of movies do this well and it is amazing that prey did just as much as in other movies. The raw feeling of not having the same technology of the alien was suspenseful and the whole idea of the primal experience was just as entertaining to watch in this movie.

To Conclude

The movie Prey is a must watch if you haven’t already, it is a good mix if you’re into the dystopian sci-fi genre and it also has great acting and storytelling. Having indigenous characters and involvement in the main focus too is also a good thing to consider as well.

It is so widely important that indigenous culture gets out there and to the make a good movie in a very popular franchise, that is a win for the indigenous communities as well. Though this blog doesn’t really focus on the movie industry itself, I recommend you watch another predator movie and compare the movie Prey to it and see the difference it makes when there isn’t any indigenous influences.

If you want to check out another popular series I recommend that you also see the show Reservation dogs which is another show that dives into indigenous modern culture today. Everything that you may want to know about it before watching can also be provided here!

Sharing this blog also brings more and more audiences for not only Powwow times but other indigenous communities and events such as powwow and other platforms that support indigenous culture and people. Thank you for this time of reading this blog and I only have one question for you.
