The phoenix Suns NBA team has just released a new Nike City Edition Jersey that pays homage to the Indigenous Peoples.
Many big organizations out there are going further than just a land acknowledgement and fully recognizing the lands that they are on by including Indigenous Peoples in their programming and franchises.
Phoenix Suns is doing this with their jerseys, commercials, and themes.
Gifts were given to the Phoenix Suns players which included an incredible beaded medallion. Beaded medallions are garb that Indigenous people wear as part of their culture and look. Many wear the Medallions as well when they dance Powwow.
“This is Unprecedented , this is historic to have a major sports like the franchise the Phoenix Suns to recognize the First Peoples of Arizona” – Governor Stephen Lewis – Gila River Indian Community
Every part of the Jersey represents something, represents a story.
The colour of the Jersey is the colour of the Turquoise stones which for the Indigenous Peoples of Arizona, means protection.
The Jersey is also adorned with 22 feathers which represents the 22 tribes that are within the area of Arizona as well.
