Cutting Vegetables
Before you begin to cook to the meat its a good idea to cut up your vegetables first then set aside for later.
First, your going to peel and dice up your potatoes into bite-sized pieces, then rinse and place in a large bowl for later.
Next, you’re going to peel and dice the carrots into bite-sized pieces as well. Rinse, and place in a large bowl for later, discarding roots ends.
After the carrots are done then you’re going to chop the celery into bite-sized pieces, then rinse and put aside for later. Discard roots ends.
Then you’re going to grab your cloves garlic and squish it under your knife and place pieces in a small bowl until later. Last but not least we have our onion which we saved for last for a good reason.
Onions have the tendency to cause watering of the eyes which is very uncomfortable which could hinder the progress of your cooking so the onion must be cut last in order to have the ability to see without your eyes being watery.
So dice your onion and place into middle bowl until later on.
Next is our meat.
Cooking The Meat
Depending upon the number of people you wish to serve, you are either going to be using a small pan or a big pan. The small pan is going to be used for a few people and the big pan for several people.
Meat always has the danger of going bad and contaminating other foods and could result in someone having (the not so fun) food poisoning. So to begin making the stew you should probably take your meat out of the freezer and thaw it out for a couple of hours in the sink with cold water. If your meat is already thawed out then your off to a great start.
While the pan is heating you are then going to then season the meat in a bowl with salt, pepper, a pinch of seasoning salt, and 2 tablespoons of good old flour then mix it all together. Then you’re going to put the meat inside the hot pan and cook for about 5 mins until all the meat is brown.
Since the bison meat is so lean, this not much fat is present so straining the meat is not required.
Putting Into Slow Cooker
So once your meat is done you can begin to plug in your slow cooker and throw your vegetables in and then once that is done you can then the meat goes last into the slow cooker, the reason for this is that the vegetables create a gap under the meat, thus creating a nice and even distribution of heat.
After placing all ingredients into the slow cooker you can then put in a 900 ml jug of beef broth over top the meat then turn up to high and cover.
Depending upon how tender you want your meat to be you can either cook for 4 to 8 hours. Stirring Occasinally.
Once the 4 to 8 hrs have gone by you’re ready to go! This with fry bread on the side is the absolute bomb! Just careful not to burn your tongue trying to eat this delicious stew to quickly. That’s How To Make Bison Stew.
