Building a following on social media as an artist can have life changing benefits for you and your brand.
Many Indigenous artists are finding that they can have more reach online using social media like Instagram, Youtube, & TikTok to name a few, to truly catapult their passion to create.
A following can mean going full time on the thing you love which is being an artist…..being a creator.
Many brands out there are also looking to partner with influencers with large followings to do brand deals. This leads to a whole other income stream as an artist to focus more time in being an artist and being more creative.
Okay hopefully you are ready to learn how to build your following and truly succeed in your artistry.

Step One: Pick a platform.
Now as much as it is great to be on every platform, many times creators find themselves doing small numbers on many platforms, instead of doing really great at one.
Each social media platforms are different and they all have algorithms that they follow for each one. If you can spend your time learning about that platform you can learn the ins and outs about how it works.
Also each platform supports different types of media. Some like “Pinterest” for example is very descriptive pictures with illustrations. YouTube is all about video and many times longer videos work better. It is also different for TikTok and Instagram.
Spend the time to figure out which one you spend most of your time on.
In the video below, we talk with content creator Notorious Cree and asked him how he built his TikTok mind boggling following to over 3 Million followers.
Step 2. Create Content
Learning about your platform that you choose is very important. In the video above you heard from content creator James Jones in his initial approach to creating his content.
What James did was look at what was trending on the TikTok platform and just recreate that same style of video with his own twist. He made that type of video fit his style and it resonated with viewers to want to interact with his content.
The above is an illustrative picture that I got off of Pinterest that shares different content ideas that you can start to push out to your potential audience.
Don’t be stuck on trying to make your content perfect or thinking you need better equipment. There are countless stories about different content creators that built followings into the millions just by being themselves, showing their messy house, using just their phones to record, and more.
The trick is to be yourself because there are millions of people who are just like you. When they find you, they will connect with you so much more because you are like them.
Step 3. Look at the Data
There is an amazing book we found called, “The Youtube Formula” by Derral Eves.
Derral Eves is responsible for Billions of views on YouTube and he helps many content creators build huge followings on YouTube. His formula is all about looking at the Data.
When you start creating content, your platform will start giving you data on who is watching your videos.
You will start to learn:
- The times they watch
- How old they are
- What they are watching it on
- Which types of videos they interact with the most
- Gender
- etc
Once you know your data. All you have to do is start making more content like the other ones that are working for you.
Step Four. Build a Culture/Tribe
Now that you have content flowing and you are understanding your data and growing. It’s time to build a tribe or culture with your audience.
Building a tribe is building a loyal following who loves your content and your character and feels like they belong to your audience of people and feel like they are being leaded to a greater vision.
There are six ways to build a loyal tribe. In this video below we take a look at Jason Capitol. He is a digital marketing coach and lifestyle coach. He teaches so many people how to go full-time online doing what they love.
The language is direct and foul so viewer discretion is advised.
Step 5. Educate Yourself
One thing we are constantly doing throughout every single step is educating ourselves in what works.
There are so many programs and books out there from people who have paved the way and built massives followings. Tony Robbins says that success leaves clues.
All we have to do is learn from the experts and follow the clues that they have left. Mimic the people who are doing things that are working and you will find that they will work for you as well as you analyze the data.

Important things to consider
You don’t need a million followers to start building a full time living as an artist.
There are many with smaller following under 30,000 followers that do very well. In fact I seen many with 10k followers or less do very well consistently selling their crafts and getting hired for gigs from a smaller following.
